Gareth Henry – Activist For Gay Rights

Aside from being a badminton player, Gareth Henry is a gay rights activist, who according to an article by NBC News, helps others flee persecution due to being harshly criticized and threatened for being gay. He helps others flee persecution in his country of Jamaica where many are against being gay, along with the government and country as a whole. Gareth Henry currently resides in Toronto, after moving there from Jamaica after losing 13 friends who were killed for being gay and with all the injustice seen in his country.

The violence against LGBT community in Jamaica has been normalized as they have been struck with fear. Due to Gareth Henry trying to make a positive impact on the community in Jamaica, he was even beaten up by the police for it and it was not the first time it happened, but the third time. The activist had paid the price for his peaceful actions numerous times as one encounter with a cop had him threatening his life at a traffic stop. After this encounter, the 39-year-old decided to move to Canada in order to not get killed by the police and others. Gareth Henry has also worked with various organizations like the Toronto People With Aids Foundation and Rainbow Railroad.

Rainbow Railroad helps LGBT individuals find a home after fleeing from persecution like Henry and many others have equally done. The activist has heard many gruesome stories against LGBT people being hurt by dogs, recklessly beaten by mobs, and items being thrown in their direction. The organization tries to help anyone who is going through the struggle and who needs to leave and find their own way. Rainbow Railroad has been able to assist a lot of people and more importantly, saving their lives.

Gareth Henry still believes there is a long way to go for LGBT people to be respected and for countries to decriminalize it. He believes that politicians need to be doing more as Henry is in Toronto with his finance, along with his family who lives there as well. The activist takes pride in assisting others and giving them a second chance.
