How Rocketship Education Helps Low-Income Families Get Their Children High Quality Educations
A quality education for their child is just about any parents most important concern. Unfortunately, this far too often relies on where you live as areas with a lot of low-income families don’t have the property tax base to afford to pay teachers well or be well supplied. There are charter schools, like Rocketship Education out of San Francisco, that are seeking to address this issue so that people have a choice outside of the public school system.
The vast majority of parents who enroll their children in a charter school are happy with that choice as a positive outcome is very often the case. The quality of education offered by schools like Rocketship Education is high as is the accountability the school has to the parents. These types of schools are subsidized by the Federal government which means that low-income parents are able to afford to send their children to these types of schools while still staying within their budgets.
One of the big benefits at charter schools is that they feature smaller class sizes in comparison to nearby public schools. This helps the classrooms develop a more cohesive relationship. Parents are also usually highly involved, especially at Rocketship Education where some parents are even involved in the hiring process of new educators after receiving specialized training.
Rocketship Education first opened its doors in 2006 and its first school, in San Jose, occurred in 2007. Since that time they have other schools in the state of California, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. They have received funding from many sources, one of them being Andre Agassi who was once one of the worlds top tennis players. He started a nonprofit called Turner-Agassi Charter School Facilities Fund and provided funding to Rocketship Education through it.
CEO Presont Smith says he and his team have learned a lot over the decade since he co-founded Rocketship Education. Among these was that having parents highly involved in their child’s education was critical to their educational outcome. He also has said that action speaks louder than words, which is why he chose to enroll both of his children in a Rocketship Education school located in Fuerza, California.
